Course Details

Objective:
Learn to take the mystery out of the subsurface by sharpening your observational skills and learning how glacial deposits apply to ground water and geotechnical projects.

  • Learn geologic context for permeability and other physical properties.
  • Learn to unravel ground water complexities in glacial sedimentary sequences.
  • Learn to conduct defensible environmental investigations.

Soil Core:
August Mack Environmental will provide a continuous soil core showing the local sedimentary sequence.

Get more from your existing borings
instead of always wanting more.

Course Content:

  • Identify common problems we all face during hydrogeologic and geotechnical projects
    • Confusing Terminology, Overlapping Standardization, and Hybrid Classification Methods.
  • Learn to properly field classify sediments according to the USCS
  • Enhance descriptive elements applied to both geology vs engineering
  • Learn the local characteristics of Wisconsin Episode Glacial Stratigraphic Framework
  • Provide a rationale for geotechnical sampling and testing that is related to project objectives and site stratigraphy
  • Learn how fine-grained glacigenic units control ground water movement
  • Assess field data for proper well placement and geotechnical testing
  • Understand the effects of weathering zones on hydraulic conductivity
  • Weave in-field analysis and QA/QC into the fabric of the drilling program
  • Discover the regional stratigraphic sequence
  • Discover recent technical references
  • Test yourself during the course through exercises and tests

Who Should Attend:
Any consultant, regulator or manager who works on ground water or geotechnical projects. This course is considered a mid- to advanced-level course based on past attendee feedback.

What To Bring:
Bring a pen, your Munsell Soil Color Book, and a few blank boring logs from your company.

What Make This Course So Powerful?
This course is priceless for those who work on hydrogeologic or geotechnical projects. Your perspective of the subsurface will forever change.....and you'll gain confidence with TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF THE SUBSURFACE ®

Instructors

Tim Fisher, PhD PhD is an accomplished glacial geologist and internationally-recognized for his work in glacial sedimentology and geomorphology.

Tim is not only a Professor of Geology at the University of Toledo, but he is also the Department Chair of Environmental Sciences.

Last year he was recognized for his work in glacial geology in the Midwest and Great Lakes region and awarded a distinguished Geological Society of America Fellowship (2015). Tim is co-editor of the 2014 GSA Special Paper 508: Coastline and Dune Evolution along the Great Lakes.

His expertise in glacial sedimentology coupled with his mastery of the regional stratigraphic setting will benefit course participants. Before accepting his position at the University of Toledo, he taught geology at Indiana University Northwest.

Dan Kelleher, PG, CIPM is a hydrogeologist and president of Midwest GeoSciences Group which was formed to simply help consultants do a better job preparing accurate and complete soil boring logs.

Dan is recognized for his technical expertise in quantitative hydrogeology (in porous and fractured media), geotechnical analysis of sedimentary sequences, aquifer testing, fractured rock hydrogeology, and predictive ground water modeling. Course participants will benefits from Dan's experience with field analysis from boring to boring in order to utilize QA/QC and help identify unexpected conditions as soon as they arise.

Testimonials
  • This course is excellent.....it should be the standard for logging in glacial soils.
    - Tom George, Senior Geologist, URS Corporation

  • An outstanding course; I highly recommend it. The classroom session provides a wealth of relevant information and techniques, and the field session reinforces the course concepts in the best way possible - in a practical, hands-on setting.
    - Nick Bonow, PG, PE, McCain and Associates

  • ....the most relevant workshop I ever attended. A nice blend of academic theory applied to environmental practice.
    - Sarah Finley, Indiana Geological Survey

  • The course gives a strong basis for description of glacial sediments and understanding of correlating geologic sequences.
    - Alex Oiffer, Hydrogeologist, Worley Parsons, Inc.

  • I have over 20 years of experience logging soil and rock core, and this course provided very valuable knowledge and insight for recognizing and writing meaningful soil and sediment descriptions. I highly recommend it for geologists, soil scientists and especially engineers.
    - Jeffery Martin, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency

  • The course topics provided an outstanding range of topics presented by experienced instructors. Excellent, comprehensive course.
    - Melissa Swartz, Geological Survey of Ireland

  • Midwest GeoSciences Group - Boring Logs On-Demand Webinar was a great re-fresher course. (It) reminded me how important accurate soil logging is always the framework for future decisions of great consequence. Also that old geologists can get set in their ways and need a re-fresher course now and then to keep them in line.
    - Steve Kobberdahl...25 yrs. logging glacial soils in Iowa and the Midwest

  • This course is a MUST for anyone working in glacial deposits. The instructors were knowledgeable, effective and friendly. I liked working with other participants, collaboratively. Field activities were practical, technical and integral to the course.
    - Claire Milloy, Ontario CPG, WB Betty & Associates, Inc.
