The Geology of Coffee: An educational tasting event for coffee enthusiasts!
Co-Hosted by: AAPG Women's Network Association of Women Geoscientists Midwest GeoSciences Group
Event Description: Discover the important role that geology plays in coffee through an educational coffee tasting event!
Have you ever wondered which unique geological and earth system factors - such as soil composition, topography, and climate - influence the flavour / flavor of your coffee? Would you like to learn more about the history and future sustainability of coffee growing practices?
Expert panelists will give you the scoop on the geology of coffee terroir and aspects of planting, harvesting and roasting. They will answer your questions and share tasting techniques like 'cupping' that help you evaluate the quality and taste profile of your coffee as well as discuss the impact of climate change on coffee growers.
After an engaging educational tasting event, you will grow your geoscience+coffee-lovers community through interactive networking. We look forward to growing our geology+coffee passion with you all!
Home Brewing Techniques, for "The Geology of Coffee"
Cambrian Coffee (Houston, TX) presents "Home Brewing Techniques". This instructional video is presented in conjunction with the AAPG Women's Network Event "The Geology of Coffee".
EXPERT PANELISTS:
Gemma Hildred Co-owner of Cambrian Coffee, Houston, Texas
Gemma is co-owner of Cambrian Coffee in Houston, Texas, a geological-themed specialty coffee shop that features her British-inspired baked goods. Gemma is also still an active geologist in the oil and gas industry, as a senior geologist at Chemostrat Inc, using inorganic geochemical data to correlate subsurface oil and gas wells.
Cambrian Coffee takes its inspiration from the Cambrian era, a period of diversification and an explosion of life, much like the coffee scene is currently undergoing in Houston. Named after the Latin world for Wales, where many of the original fossils were identified, this also holds a close connection for Gemma as it is the country of her childhood.
Gerry Ross, Ph.D. Owner of Kupa'a Farms, Kula, Hawaii
Gerry Ross (PhD) is a former geologist who worked at the Geological Survey of Canada mainly in the areas of field geology and crustal geophysics in western Canada for over 20 years. His wife Janet had been roasting and retailing coffee in the small cowboy town of Cochrane, west of Calgary. When Janet's parents presented the opportunity to move to Maui in 2003 and farm on family land, the draw exceeded professional affinities and they made the move. Kupa'a Farms has become a shining example of sustainable food production on leeward Haleakala and includes orchards that produce specialty grade coffee, citrus, tropical fruit, and vegetables with new ventures into the world of cacao and vanilla.
