GEOLOGY OF SURFING
Rocking the Waves

Did you watch the surfing in the Olympics this summer? Did you realize there is a strong link between geology and the conditions that make for 'good surf'? Come and learn about the interplay between geology and good surfing conditions. We will discuss how the dynamic forces of the ocean and the wind are affected by geologic formations and coastal conditions.

Have you ever wondered.....

  • what creates the surf?
  • why the surf can be so different in different locations and even in the same location on a different day?
  • how to 'predict' what the surf conditions might be like?
  • about some geological 'case studies' of surf locations from around the world, including the Gulf Coast?

Our passionate panelists will answer these intriguing questions. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to network with others who are interested in learning how geology influences the world around us.

Expert Panelists

Amanda Ardill

Amanda Ardill attended University of Hawaii and the University of California, Santa Barbara receiving a Bachelors of Geological Sciences in 1996. She was landlocked briefly in Colorado, receiving her Master of Geological Sciences from Colorado State University in 2001. She has worked in the energy industry since 2000. Despite growing up in the mountains in Oregon, Amanda is passionate about the ocean and surfing. She started surfing in her late teens and has been fortunate enough to explore and surf various locales in 10 countries. Amanda lives in Houston, Texas and currently calls the irregular surf and brown waters of the Gulf of Mexico her 'home' spot where she surfs with her husband and two sons.

Jonathan Warrick

Jonathan Warrick grew up in southern California and regularly rode his bike to the ocean to swim, bodysurf and surf. While many of his family members became beach lifeguards, Wedge bodysurfers, or surfed in professional contests, Jon followed an academic pathway focused on coastal zone science. He has degrees from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. For the past 23-years, Dr. Warrick has been a research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey's Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in Santa Cruz, California. As a USGS scientist, Jonathan has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles on coastal processes and landforms and was featured in the USGS video "Science of Surfing.".
