SOIL CLASSIFICATION EXAM KIT ™ By Midwest GeoSciences Group
Test Your Soil Classification Accuracy with 18 Soil Samples in this Exam Kit
Calibrate and improve your field soil classification using the USCS, USDA, Wentworth, Burmister, and AASHTO classifications
Test your soil classification and texturing analysis in the field with a one-of-a-kind collection of calibrated soil samples using:
Unified Soil Classification System
USDA Soil Textural System
AASHTO System
Wentworth Scale
Burmister System
The SOIL CLASSIFICATION EXAM KIT consists of three groups of soil:
Clay Based Samples (6 samples)
Silt Based Samples (6 samples)
Sand Based Samples (6 samples)
Each soil sample is given a label code, and the classification is not provided with the samples. Open the jars and follow standard procedures that you would use in the field. Observe and feel each sample. Test yourself, train your staff, and learn to quickly and accurately classify soil in the field.
Where are the efficiencies with classifying soil in the field? When does particle size affect our visual estimation? What do different coarse-grain sizes feel like in fine-grained samples? How does dry weight of constituents impact our ability to classify soil?
The SOIL CLASSIFICATION EXAM KIT provides answers to these questions. The five major soil classification systems use different procedures for field classification. This kit is a training tool for not only mastering your preferred system, but also is a unique opportunity to learn the differences between systems.
The most common soil classification system used in the environmental and engineering industry is the Unified Soil Classification System. However some state-specific procedures either require an additional classification or substitute it completely. So, you're covered.
Each sample in each kit has been classified according to the USCS, the USDA, the AASHTO, the Wentworth, and the Burmister. Knock yourself out with whichever classification you prefer.
Spectrum of Benefits:
Master your skills for differentiating similar, but different classifications.
Train yourself or your team.
Practice.
Test yourself with online quizzes.
Create efficiencies.
Discover the merits and limitations of each classification system.
Decrease the risk of incorrect classifications.
How it works:
Open the jar and pour out the sample. Observe it, optimize its moisture content, feel its plastic nature, estimate its characteristics and then write down your answers on the kit's answer sheet.
Test yourself according to your preferred soil classification system, or all five systems.
Each kit is designed for use by one person. Discounts are available for team orders of five kits or more.
Each base kit comes with a serial number. Log into midwestgeo.com and input your serial number to reveal:
The classification of each sample in your base kit.
(Example: for the USCS, it includes the Group Name and Group Symbol)
The geotechnical laboratory data sheets that include particle size curves, Atterberg Limits, and other supporting data.
Each classification system defines grain size differently, and each system is provided directly with the particle size curve to understand system differences.
The online questionnaire and tutorial are available after you retrieve your answers.
What's included:
6 clay based samples
6 silt based samples
6 sand based samples

"The soil classification exam kit is just what we have been looking for to help our staff improve their soil classification skills. Having the laboratory data for each sample is invaluable for matching observations to correct classifications. Thanks for creating this (training experience)!" - Stephen Sellwood, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist
